A research fellowship with a focus on archaeobotanical analyses (pollen, charcoal and/or NPPs) is available at DISTAV (Department of Earth, Environment and Life Sciences - Genoa University), within the framework of the Laboratory of Environmental Archaeology and History (LASA), an Interdepartmental Centre (DISTAV-DAFIST, Department of Antiquity, Philosophy and History) of Genoa University.
The research is part of a larger project (PRIN-PNRR 2022 project - Prot. P2022SWYTR).
The research position will be placed at the Laboratory of Archaeobotany, Palaeobotany and Palynology, Department of Earth, Environment and Life Sciences (DISTAV, Genoa University) within the framework of the Laboratory of Environmental Archaeology and History (LASA).
The researcher will be employed by Genoa University via a 12-month contract (possibly renewable up to 36 months). The gross salary is € 19.367,00.
The researcher will be under the supervision of Dr. Gabriele Casazza (ORCID: 0000-0002-3334-8551), Dr. Chiara Molinari (ORCID: 0000-0001-5813-2637) and Prof. Anna Maria Stagno (ORCID: 0000-0003-2456-337X).
The project requires close collaboration with international researchers and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment.
Description
The research fellowship aims to evaluate main changes in environmental resources management practices and forest landscapes of Italian and European mountain areas. For this purpose, archaeobotanical analyses will be carried out on sediment/soil samples from several selected sites, together with, where possible, analysis of the historical cartography available for the last two centuries. In this way it will be possible to reconstruct the succession of main vegetation cover and land-use changes, and to identify evidences of past management in the present landscape. The approach is interdisciplinary and micro-analytical according to the perspective of historical ecology.
Tasks
The project requires close collaboration with international researchers and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment.
Requirements
Candidates are required to hold a Master Degree on Biology, Natural Sciences, Forest and Environmental Sciences, Sciences and Technologies for Environment and Landscape, and will be expected to demonstrate autonomy in the various approaches of palynological analyses. Furthermore, some prior experience in systematic botany and field-based botany (floristics) is desirable, as well as the ability to use statistical software in ecological fields (Canoco, R) and in spatial data elaboration (software GIS).

The successful candidate will be asked to:
-Collect sediment cores for palynological analyses
-Undertake pollen and micro-, macro-charcoal analyses, and/or NPPs analyses
-Compile and interpret pollen and charcoal data and/or NPPs data
-Reconstruct vegetation and land-use changes from palynological data
-Ability to communicate and publish in English
-Participate to the project discussions, meetings and dissemination activities

The Sedimentology and Marine Paleoenvironmental Dynamics Group within the Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Heidelberg, Germany, invites applications for a PostDoc position in Chemical Oceanography.

The position will be based in Heidelberg, but significant parts of the work will be performed in the laboratories at GEOMAR Kiel and NIOZ (Texel) during this postdoctoral project.
Description
During a 65-day expedition from November 2023 until February 2024 RV Polarstern visited the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean and East Antarctica, sampling the water column for its lead concentration and isotopic composition (cruise EASI-2 / PS140). A total of 300 seawater samples of all major water masses in this part of the Southern Ocean could be sampled.

The scientific goal of this two-year postdoctoral project is the quantification of anthropogenic lead input into the remote Southern Ocean from these unique samples.
They aim to explore how lead of anthropogenic origin enters Antarctic waters, because anthropogenic lead can be easily distinguished from naturally introduced lead by higher concentrations and a clearly distinguishable isotopic composition. Since the classic physical-oceanographic water parameters have also been measured during the cruise, they can make clear statements as to where the dissolved lead in each examined body of water is derived from. As an overall goal they not only expect to resolve the input behaviour of anthropogenic Pb into Antarctic waters but also to obtain key information on regional scale water mass mixing processes in the Indian Ocean.

The project is funded by the DFG Priority Program Antarctic Research (SPP1158) and is a cooperation between the University of Heidelberg (Dr. Jörg Lippold), the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Dr. Marcus Gutjahr) and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) (Prof. Rob Middag). The position will be based in Heidelberg, but significant parts of the work will be performed in the laboratories at GEOMAR Kiel and NIOZ (Texel) during this postdoctoral project. Results of this project are expected to be published in peer-reviewed international journals and presented at national and international meetings and conferences.

Requirements
Requirements for applicants are completion of a PhD degree in geochemistry, oceanography or neighbouring natural sciences prior to appointment, and written and spoken fluency in English. Ideally, the successful candidate should further have a strong background in chemical oceanography and/or paleoceanography and a strong interest in isotope geochemistry.
The appointment is for two years with salary and social security benefits according to a German civil service position (E 13, 100 %).
